The Objective of Humane Society

Humane society is basically the group that is dedicated to prevent abuse or cruelty or similar issues to animals or humans. In many other countries, this term is used mainly for societies that are preventing animal cruelty. Now in the UK, this can be something that provides recovery service, waterways rescue or perhaps, something that is giving awards to distinctive individual for saving a life.

In the US, the first humane society was ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, founded by Henry Bergh in New York City in 1866. Then just after two years it was founded, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or MSPCA was formed. And as of 2012, Oregon Humane Society adopts the largest portion of animals in United States nationally with 97 percent adoption rate and 98 percent save rate with around 11000 adoptions every year.

As for the Humane Societies that are operating in the US, they are all independent of similarly named national organizations like for example, the ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the HSUS or Humane Society of the United States. While these local groups are mostly about adoption, proper sheltering and euthanasia of the animals, national organizations on the other hand are focused most on addressing and coordinating the much bigger problems that are beyond the scope or resources of independent smaller groups.

The fact is, local groups are not funded, operated or controlled by Humane Society of the United States. However, it does provide supporting grants, training of the animal care personnel, evaluation services and standards of care. HSUS are frequently working with shelters in large scale animal rescues and disaster operations, assisting in the triage, evaluation, transport and care of the rescued animals. HSUS is also providing national promotion of animal adoptions and shelters, either in partnership to other animal protection charities or alone.

Basically, there was a study made by Chronicle of Philanthropy back in 1994 focusing on the credibility and popularity of the non profit and charitable organizations. According to the study made, Humane Society of the United States is at the 6th position out of 100 charities for being the most popular non-profit group in America.

Some of the local humane society shelters are being referred as No Kill. This is described as a shelter wherein animals are euthanized for two reasons, if they’re suffering from an untreatable medical condition and when they have serious behavior problems which makes them unfit for adoption.
