How to Prevent Pets from Fleas

Most people love to keep pets in their homes and they are a good companion apart from that at times they can be affected by pests. The pests that affect these pets depend on the season and the place a person lives. Some of the pests that will affect the pets are fleas which actually can be a big problem. In warmer climates fleas can be a concern all year long. Usually they are a concern for the pets and the family health. The pests can give a person together with their pets a resting time in colder climates but that does not mean that they will not be back. Since they will always look for their next home during such times they will actually be back during the warmer season.

Caused by fleas are a lot of health concerns for the pets and they include; flea allergy dermatitis, anemia and many more. A very common disease in pets such as cats and dogs is flea allergy dermatitis and it is associated with flea bites. The skin disease causes a lot of itching and scratching which in turn leads to hair loss in the pets. Anemia on the other hand is also associated with flea bites. Signs of anemia in an animal can be; weariness, pale skin, chills and shortness of breath. During peak seasons, a lasting impact towards the animals’ health and happiness can be achieved by avoiding the pet from full infestation from the fleas maybe. That one’s pet has flea infestation the signs can be noticeable skin problems such as hair loss, hot spots and rashes. The saliva from fleas can cause if the pet suffers from serious allergic reactions. Usually this is a common sign of fleas in any animal.

Black peppered spots on the fur or the skin of the animal can be as a result of flea dirt. The flea dirt is a combination of the flea waste and blood that develops as the fleas bites and sucks blood out of the pets. Flea dirt will leave a brownish-red stain if one passes a moist towel over it and therefore if a person is not sure whether the spots are flea dirt they can pass a moist towel over it. The other sign that an animal is infested with fleas is excessive chewing and scratching. The saliva that is secreted by fleas causes an itching sensation on the animals skin which results to a lot of scratching. Injuries can be caused on the skin of the animal by scratching hence wounds and also flea allergy dermatitis can be caused and other secondary bacterial infections because of the open wounds.
